Here’s a must-read article by Nate Silver of the New York Times about the NBA’s financial situation and why David Stern and the NBA might be lying.
A few note-worthy facts from the article:
- NBA’s revenues have grown by 11% over five years, adjusted for inflation, or by 30% over 10 years.
- Ticket sales are down 6% compared to 5 years ago but up 22% since 1999-2000.
- Growth in non-player expenses has outpaced that of salaries, having increased by 13% over five years and 43% over 10 years.
I’ll touch up on this subject more this week including exploring how NBA owners make money from non-BRI (basketball related income) methods which are a direct result of team ownership, until then, I still believe that the NBA is misleading with their facts and all owners profit from owning an NBA team.

The Many Companions of Doctor Who

Adding to their remarkably steady run of great journalism, GQ has compiled a definitive feature on Badlands— easily one of the most evocative films of the past half-century. Speaking to everyone from starring actors Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek down to photographers and assistant camera men, no stone is left unturned. The set conflicts, the legacy the movie left behind. And let’s not forget Terrence Malick’s notorious reclusion, which the first hundred words of the piece is dedicated to. These eight pages make for not just an intriguing read, but a necessary one if you’re a fan of the film.
